The Malawi Civil Aviation Authority, in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is hosting a high-level Aerodrome Certification Workshop at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe.
The meeting has attracted participation of Aviation Authorities from Malawi, Kenya, South Sudan, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zambia, and Mozambique.
Speaking on Monday when he officially opened the workshop. Secretary for Transport and Public Works Eng. David Mzandu underscored the importance of the workshop in strengthening aviation safety, infrastructure, and regulatory compliance.
“This is more than a learning platform. It is a strategic opportunity to align our practices with international standards and build a stronger aviation sector,” he said.
Speaking earlier Acting Director General of the Malawi Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA) Samuel Kalua revealed that Malawi is committed to certifying Kamuzu International Airport in line with ICAO standards.
“A certified airport means readiness for international traffic, increased investor confidence, and safer skies,” Kalua noted.
In his Sspeech ICAO representatives from the Eastern and Southern African Region Office, Elisha Omuya praised Malawi’s leadership in hosting the event, which will enhance regional cooperation and capacity in aerodrome certification and oversight.
The Workshop, held under ICAO’s “No Country Left Behind” initiative, brings together aviation professionals and regulators from across the Eastern and Southern African Region.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Malawi was established in 2017 in accordance to the Civil Aviation Bill of 2017 but it became operational on 23rd October, 2023. The CAA is responsible for regulating the Aviation Transport Sector and since its establishment; the Authority is pushing to ensure that all aviation players/operators comply to aviation safety standards.
