Nacala Logistics Makes First Coal Delivery to Lilongwe

The Balaka to Lilongwe Railway Track has been successfully rehabilitated and is now back to life bringing railway connectivity to the central and neighboring Zambia.

The rehabilitation exercise which was carried by the Nacala Logistics involved reconstruction of some bridges along the track that were damaged and also replacing damaged rail in some places.

Meanwhile Nacala Logistics has already started using the track with a first cargo train from Lilongwe to Nacala and first coal load train trip from Moetize in Mozambique to Kanengo in Malawi making maiden trip since reopening.

The delivery of Coal  from Moetize give opportunity for coal users within the central region and especially around Kanengo industrial area that they can utilize the rail connectivity to get alternative coal supplies from Moetize.

Government of Malawi through the Ministry is working hard to ensure that rail connectivity is put back in place in all areas where there are existing rail structure up to Zambia as it look to take the rail to the Northern region.

The Ministry using various projects and working hand in hand with the current rail operator the Nacala Logistics is working on replacing damaged infrastructure between Limbe to Nsandama and Lilongwe to Mchinji.

Government believes that once the rail way connectivity is back fully linking Malawi with all major seaports in Mozambique and linking with other major trading countries Zambia and democratic republic of Congo, the country will benefit economically as it will bring down the cost of importuning and exporting goods.
