Status of Locally Funded Projects Implemented between 2020 and 2024

The government of Malawi through the Ministry of Transport and Public Works has successfully constructed a number of roads with locally sourced funds between 2020 and 2024.

The road reconstruction projects were designed to;1-improve mobility and reducing travel time; 2- bring economic growth of local authorities through easing connectivity, facilitating trade and;3- create jobs during the implementation stage.

Below are the affected roads and the progress details;

1.     Mzimba – Mzarangwe

·        8.5km of 8.5 km completed in 2020.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility and reducing travel time.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury.

2.     Dowa - Chezi Road Phase I

·        15.2 of 15.2 completed in 2020.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility and reducing travel time.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury.

3.     Kawere - Mkanda Road Phase I

·        10 of 10 KM completed in 2020.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility and reducing travel time.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury.

4.     Lirangwe – Chingale

·        3.1 km of 21km completed in 2020.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which resulted in abandonment and termination of contract. Ministry addressed constraint by continuous lobbying with the Treasury

5.     Chikwawa – Chapananga Phase II

·        5 km of 5 km completed in 2021.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury.

6.     Dzaleka-Ntchisi-Mpalo Phase I

·        8.5 km of 8.5 km completed in 2023.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility and reduced travel time.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury.

7.     Njakwa – Livingstonia – Phwezi

·        65 km of 65 km completed in 2024.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury.

8.     Mkanda – Kapiri Phase II

·        10 of 10 km completed in 2023

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury

9.     Nsanama – Nayuchi

·        10 km of 10 km completed in 2023.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury

10.Nsanje-Marka Road

·        31 km of 31 km completed in 2023

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility.

·        Part of the road was damaged by Cyclone Freddy necessitating fresh works to remedy damage

11.Monkey Bay – Cape Maclear Phase I

·        10 of 10 km completed in 2024.  

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility and reducing travel time.

·        Erratic and inadequate funding which was addressed by continuous lobbying with the Treasury

12.Ntcheu - Tsangano Road Phase I

·        9 of 21 KM completed in 2024.

·        The completed section was opened to traffic improving mobility and reducing travel time.

·        Inadequate capacity of the contractor to manage the project. The resolution was to terminate the project in December 2024.
