Mhango further disclosed that National Bank of Malawi has committed that they will help the government to procure two new vessels that would be plying on the lake.
"In 2017, the government of Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika launched the National Transport Master Plan to begin moving goods from roads to either rail or water. So as a Ministry, we will now be emphasizing on asking all stakeholders to utilise these vessels," Mhango said.
He also raised concern over a growing skills shortage in the maritime sector when he visited the marine training school, which produces artisans, engineers, and captains for the sector. According to Mhango, the country is facing a capacity gap due to an ageing workforce and insufficient lecturers, with few replacements entering the system hence the need to rejuvenate the school.
He also said that the Malawi Lake Services Limited has functional cargo vessels that are able to move goods, and in so doing saving the roads which are being damaged because they are carrying heavy load.
